Panaji/Goa: Goa Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday evening after a prolonged battle against pancreatic cancer at the age of 63.
A four-time Chief Minister of Goa who was known for his simplicity and had good relations across the political spectrum. Parrikar breathed his last at his residence here in Goa.
"We inform with deep grief that our beloved Chief Minister of Goa Shri. Manohar Parrikar passed away today evening, after a spirited battle against cancer," the Chief Minister's Office tweeted.
Parrikar, a former Defence Minister, had been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February last year. It was in October that the state government made a formal announcement about the BJP leader suffering from a pancreatic ailment.
He is survived by two sons -- Utpal, an electrical engineering graduate from Michigan State University, and Abhijat, a local businessman. His wife Medha passed away in 2000.
His cremation will be held at Miramar Goa at 5 pm on Monday. As a mark of respect, the central government declared national mourning on Monday.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has condoled the passing away of the Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar.
The Prime Minister said, “ Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.
The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind said, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten.”
The Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu has condoled the passing away of the Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar. In a message, the Vice President said that Shri Parrikar was one of the most lovable and honest senior politicians of our country. He was a dynamic and dedicated individual who led a life full of values and principles, he added.
